Saul Stokes returns to the music scene with Vast, a showcase for his unique brand of electronica. With Vast Stokes explores new territory utilizing a highly developed lyrical sense built, as ever, on the idiosyncratic sound of his "hand-forged" equipment. These tracks are truly multi-faceted, and the many detailed sonic embellishments, as well as the fluid structures, set Vast apart.

Stokes is part of a thread that joins Tonto's Expanding Headband and Wolfgang Riechmann with Ulrich Schnauss and Schlammpeitziger, and nods towards the post-industrial, chill-out, and pop-ambient legacy. Stokes coaxes rich sounds and effervescent melodies from his custom built electronics, equipment that must be tuned before each recording session and live performance. Stokes successfully incorporates big ideas and small to create a collection of deeply layered music suitable for many listens.

Saul Stokes was born in Seattle Washington, and after adolescent training on both the violin and trumpet, he discovered the tonal possibilities of the synthesizer. Stokes started creating electronic music as a teenager in the mid 1980's and soon his fascination with the palette of sounds available via synthesizer led him to learn the basics of analog equipment construction. While attaining a degree in Industrial Design, Stokes used his DIY approach to build highly eccentric music devices, and he began to restructure his musical ideas focusing on music created purely from home-made synthesizers and computer technology. Saul resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Saul Stokes released four solo albums, Washed in Mercury (1997), Zo Pilots (1998), Outfolding (2000) and Fields (2003), as well as Thermal Transfer (2002) (with Vir Unis ) on the Hypnos label. In 2001 saw Abstraction released on Greenhouse Music, and 2003 brought the live recording Radiate on Databloem. Since 2003 Stokes has also collaborated with Berkeley's Foundry label, releasing tracks on the compilation projects sub.terra, Fluidities, and Bibimbap, and in 2006 Vast.
