from Soundvision written by TJ Norris http://tjnorris.net/ Ben Swire Equilibrium (CDEP by Foundry/Hypnos) I like that this short disc (EP) starts in the middle with Interim and takes off with Departure. Foundry introduces its new EP series with former drummer, Bay Area transplant and electronics man Ben Swire. In the past two years Swire has moved from his Massachusetts home to London to San Francisco and here has filled our ears with steam and oozings, all filtered through a fractured beat. In some way this disc reflects the feeling of travel, of moving, a sense of the dust being kicked up from underneath your feet. Captured by the gray areas of Equilibrium the ear is drawn to subtle samples and hints of places without faces. There is an exploratory sensibility herein, a youthful and imaginative freeflow of ideas with some base definition. On Knot there is a more somber range referencing perhaps Frank Bretschneider, only with a lilt. Four very tight ambient tracks that beg for more. I always felt EPs were just a teaseŠ.like a 7" and ˝.
