from Outburn #18 Various Artists 360° (The Foundry/Hypnos) SOUNDSCAPE SPACE ADVENTURE: Each of the nine tracks (and six "Interpolation" connecting segments) of 360° were recorded specifically for this Foundry concept project. The goal is to create an arc, both in terms of a progression through musical styles and as an episodic but mysterious narrative that is brought full-circle with the closing track. Rhomb's delicate chimes, oscillating bells, and reverberating tones form the basis of the opening track, which also serves as the 360° title theme (the redux version is the album closer). The concept begins with an astronaut's personal log about unusual and wondrous things that happen while working outside the ship, and each subsequent track furthers the space adventure story line by sonically interpreting the text of the liner notes. Contributions from eM, Jonathan Hughes, High Skies, Mark Van Hoen and Seofon, Sketch, Thermal, and Kim Cascone complete the picture, each contributing space minded experimental soundscapes that could stand well on their own, but work even better in combination with each other. For the casual listener, 360° provides interesting and subtly varied soundscapes, but given the conceptual nature of this collection, the overall effect can be much more gratifying if you immerse yourself into the story and sounds. -Octavia |
