The Apiary "Descent" CD (The Foundry, US) Two new discs by Michael Bentley, founder of the Foundry label, representing two different styles of electronic music. The Apiary is his quasi-New Age pseudonym, which takes in the sing-song melodic sense of the Residents, the dreamy and lush style of Robert Rich, and flourishes of concrete nature sounds like running water or birds chirpping. Not really my thing, but an unobtrusive background listen to be sure. eM is very different. All electronic drones and pulses, similar in spots to old Arcane Device. There is little trace of melody here, just buzzes and hums and grating machine noises. I think it's neat that this was done by the same guy that did the "Descent" CD. A nice debut, I'm curious to hear what this guy's next step will sound like. (Howard Stelzer) |
