from Exposé Magazine written by Phil Derby eM - All The Stars Burning Bright (The Foundry fou.13, CD, 2001) Beautifully packaged and arranged, All The Stars Burning Bright is space music in the truest sense of the word. The concept has been done before on Spacecraft's first album, on a single out-of-print recording by Dr. Fiorella Terenzi (Music from the Galaxies), and in a box set of NASA Voyager recordings. The concept being, take deep space transmissions in their raw form, and use them as the basis for a listening experience. The disc isn't specific about what sort of space recordings are included, other than to say it's "various astrophysical phenomena." Oftentimes the music whirls as if in a vortex, other times strange bleeps and bloops lend an alien tone of the old sci-fi sort, as on "Parsecs." One of my favorites is the opener, "A Dream Of Summer Stars," definitely dreamy and ethereal, the beautiful side of dark ambience. A lot of the music, for example "Suspensions," is composed of deep drones and muted rumblings. Parts sound quite dark, but other parts are so bright they shimmer like the stars. "Burning Bright" is an eerie haunter, suitable for Halloween as well as outer space. Nary a melody is heard, but each track is alive with subtle textures and layers. Highly recommended. 2001 (c) Phil Derby / Exposé Magazine |
