The Apiary- Descent

Recorded for the excellent experimental/ambient/electronic label The Foundry (in Berkeley, California), this CD explores the often tense relationship between humans and nature. Specifically, this electronic soundscape is often dark, haunting and earthy, sometimes combining to form an unusual marriage. The music is highly textured and at times lonely and accurately reflects an introspective vision into the natural forces that make up everyday living. The Wire stated that "Descent is more explicitly Norse and mystical. The accompaniment to an installation, it explores repeating thematic materials: a melodic bass series, lonely piping, sparse synthesizer notes with added spectral effects." In addition, Outburn called Descent "the spirituality of moist earth and the lonely agony that comes from being disconnected from one's surroundings." This is a very experimental disc (but surprisingly accessible) that rewards the patient listener. I have managed to leave this CD near the changer for a few months now- there must be some magnetic pull emanating from this disc.
