eM: All The Stars Burning Bright [Fou.13]

Anyone into the style of vast-sounding, dark, epic, space/cosmic synth music albums, and the best titles on the patchy Hypnos label, just has to check out this amazing CD because if ever you wanted an atmospheric, drifting interplanetary voyage in sound, then this is the one. Using a variety of processed sounds and samples, superbly crafted synth layers and with a deep resonance running through the tracks, this is as good as they come in this style, one you won't be able to put down.

MOLLUSK: Accretions [Fou.14]

"Many of the ideas which lie behind these tracks came directly from reading about mollusks....." so says the musician on his promo card. Makes you feel quite normal, really. That said, the music is firmly in the realms of space-cosmic drifting, only here with an altogether different sound quality to it. At the bottom end, there's this rich, deep sort of synth rumble that runs through the music like a vein in a rock formation, while at the tope end we hear a varied layer of synthscapes, sometimes with a sort of sea-like feel but more often just adding to the glorious seam of music that flows through the calm waters of this album. As finely crafted space synth music goes, it's got a dark undertow, keeps your interest throughout and is certainly one to find a place on the player more often than most.

SEOFON with STEVE ROACH/VIDNA OBMANA/ROBERT RICH/STEPHEN KENT: Zero Point [Fou.11]

The main guy is the guiding light behind Ambient Temple Of Imagination and it is from their last proper studio album that the source material for this project emanates. However, the music has been treated and recycled by the other musicians, and the result is one of the finest space music albums on the planet. The album opens with a brief flurry of rich cosmic synths and shuffling rhythms before the rhythm dies away and you embark on one of the best space music journeys there is to be had, guided by the expertise of each of the musicians concerned. Without any identifying breakdown as to who does what and when on the album, it's designed for you to lose yourself in the splendour that constitutes the soundscapes that surround and envelop you in a multi-layered set of synths, treatments and deep, dark rumbles, percussive textures and rhythmic backdrops, soaring synths all around you, as perfect an album that is not on the Hypnos label as you'll find, but better than anything that's come out of that label to date. More serene than the ATOI albums, this is real cosmic music as it should be heard, with dynamics, range, variation, atmosphere and depth, creative, full of ideas but not in any way meandering or aimless. There is substance to all this, a heart at the centre and a sense of purpose that makes this a voyage not to be missed. Simply can't be faulted.
