from All Music Guide Reviews 10/2001 written by Matt Borghi http://www.allmusic.com/ Mollusk - Accretions (The Foundry - 2001) Accretions is the first CD release from Mollusk, the musical alter ego of Malcolm Bly. Accretions is a perfect melding of organic inspiration and digital audio wholly wrapped into one small package that takes the form of sonic excursion. The music of Accretions delves into an oceanic and aquatic realm, taking the listener into a deep and resonant, almost amniotic journey. The sounds that Mollusk expresses on Accretions are similar in a lot of ways to other water/sound-based recordings, but this one is different because it seems more exploratory, more experimental, and certainly more abstract. In parts this recording is very harmonious, in other parts this recording sounds like one of those microphones that marine biologists put under water to pick up the sounds of the underwater universe. At the same time, though, this is also quite an ambient recording; it may allude to some kind of underwater ambience, but it's still very ambient. This is a very interesting and very exciting recording that explores some new sounds and realms of electronic ambient music. |
