Ampersand Etcetera Volume 2 Number 6 (4.17.2000) written by Jeremy Keens

A brief follow on from The Foundry special a couple of issues ago. Since then I have had the opportunity to obtain some of the chapbooks produced by Bentley and The Foundry put out (ie I bought a bunch from Michael). I delayed sending this out by a couple of days as I knew they were on their way. Her is not the place for a review - this is after all a music newsletter - but if any of you are interested in things literary and artistic get in touch with Michael. The fine design touch evident in the cd releases is here also. They range from ones such as i, capsule, strange prisoners or scissors to grind where the image is prime (old woodcuts or prints, large and small drawings or artworks) through to cut ups like Sone of our airheads is missing or parts of incredibly strange, to longer text works which may be continuous narrative (baba yaga, X's disease) to poetic or discontinuous pieces (world service dada, text to accompany young master organisation, vii). Most contain some forms of illustration, and I am about to lose myself in them. At first glance, the extensive collection of small drawings and phrases (her face, eyes floating in a face, plummet etc) that make the intricate and long "i" (what is the smallest letter) is proving the most seductive, followed by the silhouettes of strange prisoners, but the longer texts are also singing their siren call! Anyway, I imagine Michael wouldn't reject any expressions of interest in these literaryartworks. See the site for more details (http://www.foundrysite.com)
