48th FOLKLORE FESTIVAL 21-25.8.2002

My main musical activity outside of The Foundry is in the area of Scottish traditional music. My wife Susan and I play for a Scottish Dance group here in the Bay Area, and this summer that group (The Red Thistle Dancers) was invited to perform at the 48th International Folklore Festival in Cerveny Kostelec, a small town in Eastern Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. Also attending were groups from Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Algeria, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Slovakia and The Czech Republic. We worked hard (10 shows over the five day festival), drank a lot of beer, and had a great time.

To the right is the poster for the event (note the correct spelling of the town's name!), and below is a picture of the band, which included Etienne Ozorak on accordion, my wife Susan on violin, and myself on bodhran (I also sang and played penny whistle a bit). You also get a sense from the band picture what a lovely venue this outdoor amphitheatre was, and how large an audience it could hold (almost 3000 for the biggest shows). The map provides a sense of where the festival was located relative to other cities in the Czech Republic.
